There is a beautiful building built by the Mughal Empire in Agra, India. Which is known as Taj Mahal. This beautiful building is spread over an area of 42 acres. Which is an example of beauty. But a sad story is hidden behind it. What is that story and why and how the Taj Mahal was built, we will know in today’s article. So let’s start.
5) Structure
This 400-year-old building is still known for its beauty. People come to India from far and wide to see it. Taj Mahal is one of the seven wonders of the world and it is also included in the list of World Heritage Sites. To build this magnificent building, a team of 20,000 workers worked day and night for 22 years. After which this building was built. If we estimate the price of this building, then this building made of marble is worth more than 1 billion dollars i.e. 7.5 crore rupees in today’s era. Because Mughal architects have left marks of their mastery in it. Even today’s top engineers never tire of praising them.
The Taj Mahal has been designed in such a way that if you see it from the main gate, it looks big. But as you move closer to it from the door, it becomes smaller in size. This is not the first mastery that Mughal architects showed while building the Taj Mahal. Rather, the mastery of Mughal architects is also visible in the four minarets surrounding the Taj Mahal. These minarets have not been properly erected straight. Rather, they are slightly tilted outwards. If these minarets were erected straight, they would have appeared tilted inwards when seen from a distance.
Another reason for tilting the minarets of the Taj Mahal outwards was that if there is an earthquake, in such a situation the minarets fall outwards and the building in the middle remains safe. Mughal architects had ensured its safety while building the Taj Mahal. But still, it is a matter of wonder to build a building like Taj Mahal without concrete or steel.
4) Love Story
The story of Taj Mahal begins in 1607 when the Mughal Sultanate ruled over this entire region of India and Pakistan. That day was the birthday of Shahab-ud-din Muhammad Khurram, the beloved son of Mughal emperor Jahangir, and he had turned 15 years old. A grand celebration was organized at Agra Fort on his birthday. Jahangir used to weigh Prince Khurram in the treasury on prince every birthday. That is, prince used to got a treasury equal to his weight.
On this birthday of Prince Khurram, Jahangir gave him a special gift. Jahangir arranged Prince Khurram’s marriage with the daughter of one of his lawyers. Whose name was Mumtaz Mahal. Mumtaz Mahal and Prince Khurram fell in love with each other on the very first day. At that time, no one knew that this love would become so famous. For the next 10 years, Prince Khurram fought many battles and won them. After which Jahangir gave Prince Khurram the title of Shah Jahan. Which means ‘King of the world’.
Shah Jahan had a total of six wives and they lived in Agra Fort. Out of those six, Shah Jahan loved Mumtaz Mahal the most. This was the reason why he used to spend most of his time with Mumtaz Mahal. Time was passing fast and after a few years, i.e. on 28 October 1627, Mughal Emperor Jahangir died. Shah Jahan, who was very famous in the Mughal Sultanate, ascended the throne after his father in February 1628.
The entire Mughal Sultanate was very happy with their Shah Jahan. This was the period when the Mughal Sultanate was at its peak. During Shah Jahan’s reign, the Mughal Sultanate spread over many parts of India, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Shah Jahan himself took all the decisions of the Sultanate and Mumtaz Mahal used to advise him from behind the scenes. But no one knew that this happiness would soon turn into mourning.
Shah Jahan had to face a big war which continued for the next two years and Shah Jahan got victory in this war. But before Shah Jahan could celebrate his victory, he was told a bad news, the death of Mumtaz Mahal. Mumtaz Mahal died on 17 June 1631 while giving birth to her 14th child. After which the entire Mughal Sultanate was drowned in grief.
This news made Shah Jahan sad. His world completely fell apart. Shah Jahan’s first love and favorite wife Mumtaz Mahal had left this world. This grief pushed Shah Jahan into darkness. It did not eat anything for the next eight days, and for the next two years it did not listen to any music or use any scent.
3) Construction
Mumtaz Mahal had a wish before dying. She wanted her grave to be the most beautiful grave in the world. Shah Jahan spent his entire life and wealth to fulfill this wish. The construction of Taj Mahal began in 1632, 6 months after Mumtaz Mahal’s death. On Shah Jahan’s orders, 20,000 laborers were called to Agra from all over the Sultanate. They included the best artisans. Mumtaz Mahal’s grave was located on the banks of the river Yamuna. Therefore, it was a very difficult task to build the most beautiful building in the world here.
The land on the banks of the river is soft and if this place is excavated, the flow of water could damage the foundation of the Taj Mahal. To solve this problem, Mughal engineers dug many wells here and these wells were dug until dry soil was found. After digging the wells, they were be filled with stones. Then big pillars of stones were made on top of them. Along with the labourers, an army of elephants was also used to carry out this work. This trick of the Mughal engineer worked and now a strong foundation was present for the Taj Mahal.
Now it was the turn of the design of the Taj Mahal. For this, Shah Jahan took ideas from the tombs of his forefathers. The idea of minarets was taken from Jahangir’s tomb. The idea of the middle building was taken from Akbar’s tomb. The idea of the dome was taken from Humayun’s tomb. When the designs of these three tombs were combined, a beautiful design emerged. Which we call the Taj Mahal. The work of building the Taj Mahal was not an easy task. A lot of money was being spent on it. The royal treasury was getting empty every passing day.
Shah Jahan was not worried about anything. He just wanted to complete this work. It is said that during the construction of Taj Mahal, so many people were brought that due to them, there was a shortage of food items in the surrounding areas. Because Shah Jahan had ordered food grains from the surrounding areas to Agra for the food of the workers. After many years of hard work, the building of Taj Mahal was ready and now it was time to decorate it with marble. Marble was brought from Rajasthan, 400 km away from Agra. Because the Makrana marble of this place is still considered the best marble in the world.
Shah Jahan had kept the entire stack of Makrana marble safe for the Taj Mahal. That is, no one was allowed to buy it until the construction of Taj Mahal was completed. Thousands of tons of marble was brought from Rajasthan to Agra with the help of thousands of elephants. The dome of Taj Mahal is so big that its grandeur can be estimated just by looking at it. Nowadays such domes can be made with the help of steel structure. But the track used by the Mughal engineer to build this 40 meter high dome 400 years ago is still praiseworthy.
Pietra Dura technique was used for the decoration of Taj Mahal. In this technique, precious stones were added to the marble. That is, the marble was cut with great skill according to the shape of the precious stones. Then precious stones were added to the marble with the help of glue. The glue used in the Taj Mahal was made from shiira, lemon juice and marble powder. Even today, this glue is used for the renovation of the Taj Mahal.
After 22 years, in 1654, the construction of the Taj Mahal was completed. Shah Jahan had succeeded in building the world’s most beautiful tomb for his beloved wife. Shah Jahan named this magnificent building after his wife. Influenced by Mumtaz Mahal, Shah Jahan named the building Taj Mahal. Every year Shah Jahan used to go to Taj Mahal via river Yamuna on the death anniversary of Mumtaz Mahal.
2) Shah Jahan Death
The Taj Mahal was completed but it cost so much that the treasury of the Mughal Sultanate was empty. But Shah Jahan wanted to build another building like the Taj Mahal. When Shah Jahan’s son Aurangzeb saw that Shah Jahan was wasting the treasury of the Sultanate, he imprisoned Shah Jahan and himself sat on the throne of the Mughal Sultanate. Shah Jahan was made a prisoner and kept in the Agra Fort from where he used to see the Taj Mahal. Shah Jahan left this world after spending 8 years in prison at the age of 74. Then he was buried next to his wife in the Taj Mahal.
1) Beauty
The beauty of the Taj Mahal is unmatched even today. This is the only building in the world that keeps changing color. The most amazing feature of Taj Mahal is that it changes its colour four times a day. Its colour is soft pinkish or golden in the dawn, brilliant white in the midday, orange and red in the evening and silvery sheen at night. The features of Taj Mahal listed it in one of the seven wonders in the world.
